Is saying "well played" after winning rude?

Let's face it, not all games are good games and well played, and if we played a game where I hang all my pieces and or step into a stalemate having mate in one, only a retard would say "good game, well played" - cause it wasnt.

As I am not a retard I will respectfully disagree with you, I am assuming an opponent will give me the respect of trying their best, and I will respect them for that, even if they end up losing. If they throw the game, then yes they don't deserve the respect, but who am I to judge them.
It is crazy to me that people are considering this rude.

It is common place in any online game to say good game (GG) WP (well played) or some variation of those.

I think the biggest thing people are considering is that the statement itself is less about the literal meaning of "Well played" and more just a way to offer respect.

I believe assuming any malice when someone wins and says well played is reading too far into it.

EXACTLY! Why anyone would assume respecting an opponent to be trying to slyly insult them is beyond me, and it makes me wonder how twisted people's brains have to be to have such low self esteem as to see everything as an insult.

mate...chess players can get very touchy past the 2000 rating barrier believe me...you get some real oddballs lol
Edit: I think your statement shows a certain lack of experience at the higher levels tbh...I have played online since 1997 and peaked in about 2006 or so...met some real crazies who fly at your throat even for just saying 'gg'

Why people would ever act like that is beyond me, I have met high level chess players before irl and they didn't strike me as majorly crazy, but maybe on here people hide behind the fact that people don't really have to share their info on here, idk, still, I'm gonna keep saying "well played" whether they did well or not, because it is respectful. If people don't like that, then ig its not my fault, I didn't make them have chat on.
@MarkIorio I dont believe that there’s that option in Lichess and your point has SFA to do with chess. It’s purely argumentative.

I mean it sarcastic even if I lose! But I am a bad person, that's different.
I personally don't mind being on the receiving end of a "Good Game" even if I lose, but am never sure if I should say it when I win. Someone might just feel offended. This is different OTB / in-person as I can convey the emotion a lot better & they would see that I am being respectful in my greeting.
I think it's perfectly fine to say things like "Good game" "Thanks" "Bye!" "Well played" just don't say it sarcastically. If my opponents take it as an insult, it's their problem, not mine.
