About me

My name is Sam Martin, and I am a 25-year-old National Master living in the United States. I first became serious about chess when I was a teenager, and I improved rapidly due to working with an experienced coach on openings, middlegame strategy, and calculation. I returned to playing in chess tournaments in 2022, after taking a break of several years while I was in college, and gained the National Master title after crossing 2200 in live rating about a year later. I am still always interested in learning more about the game. If we work together, I'm sure I can help you to learn more and achieve your chess goals as well! I am available for both lessons and training games. The first lesson is always free, so you know what you're getting from me.
Feel free to get in touch with me via private message on lichess.org.
I have included links to my online USCF and FIDE player profiles below.

Teaching experience

I have taught chess for more than 5 years in a number of different settings, both in private lessons and group classes. I am especially experienced in working with kids, and it is always rewarding for me to see a young player grow in their enthusiasm for chess and get better at the game. I accept all ages and skill levels!

Teaching methodology

I have a flexible teaching style that uses a number of different methods to work on a student's problem areas and develop their understanding, such as reviewing their recent games, giving calculation exercises, looking at opening theory, typical pawn structures, and more. I believe that having a coach is not a substitute for independent study, and I see my main job as giving you guidance and insight to help you study more effectively on your own. I want to give you more tools in your mental toolbox and support your path to improvement by showing you what you need to work on next to become a complete player. I will do this both during the lesson, through examples, and outside the lesson, by giving homework that reinforces and builds on the themes we have discussed together.
